Now, we need to name the sweeper -- participate in the poll below!
In the first two months of using a rental street sweeper (as we wait for the one we purchased to be delivered) we picked up 100 tons (TONS!) of trash and debris from roadways in Albemarle County. That translates to safer roads and cleaner waterways.
What should we name this new community hero?

Street sweeping plays an important part in:
Preserving the Environment
Street sweeping helps preserve our roadways by removing wearing debris and extending the life of paved roads and paths.
Street sweeping helps protect wildlife by eliminating the number of plastics and litter that end up on the sides of roads.
Street sweeping helps to remove harmful metals and pollutants that can enter our air emissions. By reducing the amount of road debris, street sweeping helps preserve our local waterways and air.
Public Safety
The removal of roadside debris lessens the rate of vehicle accidents and improves driver safety.
Construction and roadway debris can cause unsightly conditions as well as objects and items to leak into streets or paved paths. If not swept routinely, these items can become hurdles for pedestrians, runners, and cyclists to avoid which may lead to accidents and injuries.
The Health of Our Community
One of the main ways street sweeping helps improve the health of a community is by removing harmful materials from our roadways. These materials can include metals, organics, and harmful nutrients.
