History of the Courts at Darden Towe
History of the Courts at Darden Towe
Darden Towe Park, established in 1990 in Albemarle County, initially featured four tennis courts as part of its recreational facilities. These courts were primarily used for casual pickup games and occasionally hosted summer tennis lessons and camps.
Over time, tennis's popularity at the park began to wane. However, as tennis use declined, a new sport started gaining traction: pickleball. This shift in recreational preferences reflected a broader trend, with pickleball experiencing significant growth nationwide. Between 2019 and 2021, pickleball participation grew by nearly 40%, making it America's fastest-growing sport.
In 2021, the Darden Towe Park Advisory Committee unanimously voted to convert two tennis courts into six dedicated pickleball courts. This decision was supported by the Central Virginia Pickleball Club, which raised $20,000 through community donations to fund the project. This transformation has been well-received, as evidenced by the current usage patterns. Today, the courts at Darden Towe Park are predominantly used for pickleball, with an estimated 98% of court time dedicated to this sport. The pickleball facilities now host a variety of activities, including pickup games, lessons, special events, and tournaments.
