We are running a 12-month pilot project to turn Free Bridge Lane into a car-free promenade.
On November 1, 2024, the road was closed to motor vehicles to create a safe, scenic space for walking, running, and biking. This project is part of the County’s commitment to improving public spaces and making recreational areas safer and more enjoyable. Located along the Rivanna River between Darden Towe Park and Route 250, the new promenade will allow pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy the area without vehicle traffic. During the next year, we will closely monitor the usage of the promenade to understand how well this space serves the community. This information will help determine whether the promenade should become a permanent feature or if further adjustments are needed.
What Does This Mean for You?
Safer, Car-Free Space: The promenade will eliminate vehicular traffic, making it safer for walkers, runners, and cyclists of all ages to use the space.
Parking Adjustments: While Free Bridge Lane will no longer accommodate vehicles, parking will still be available in the parking lot at the north end of the road. The lot will be open during regular park hours.
Environmental and Health Benefits: The transformation of Free Bridge Lane supports the County's green initiatives and encourages healthier lifestyles through active transportation.
Why this Project?
This project is part of the 2019 Pantops Master Plan, where the community prioritized making Free Bridge Lane a "Green Street" with enhanced bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. We heard from community members eager to see a safer, more accessible space for recreational use, and we're excited to bring this vision to life through a 12-month pilot program.
