AC44 Planning Commission Work Session: Land Use and Transportation

Time: 6:00 pm

Location: Lane Auditorium in the County Office Building at 401 McIntire Road, Charlottesville VA 22902.

At the December 19 work session, the Planning Commission will provide feedback on ways to implement the Planning Toolkits through the Comp Plan update. Topics include multimodal planning and activity centers, updating future land use designations, community design guidelines, density calculations, and rural crossroads communities.

The four Planning Toolkit topics were previously discussed earlier in Phase 2 and included: activity centers in the Development Areas; factors for potential future Development Areas expansion; rural crossroads communities; and rural interstate interchanges. These are all topics in the current (2015) Comprehensive Plan that are important for coordinated land use and transportation planning and supporting the Growth Management Policy.

The Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors held work sessions on August 8 and September 6 to provide direction to the AC44 team on the Toolkit topics, which included: use centers and multimodal transportation planning in the Development Areas; continue to prioritize efficient use of the Development Areas over potential expansion; develop a clear definition of crossroads communities with a focus on small-scale uses that serve nearby community members; and include recommendations for future small area plans for two of the four rural interstate interchanges (Shadwell and Yancey Mills).

The next Planning Commission work session (to be scheduled in early 2024) will be focused on draft goals and objectives for Rural Area Land Use and Transportation, Development Areas Land Use and Transportation, and Community Facilities.

Materials for the Planning Commission meeting will be available approximately one week prior to the meeting here.
